SUMMARY:ABOVE MY HEAD – FREE PERFORMANCE
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION\n  \nDate: September 7\, 2026\, 9:00 PM–10:00 PMVenue: Independent Theater Hungary\, 1094 Budapest\, Páva u. 30. \nThe performance is in English. \nABOVE MY HEAD is a theatrical journey following a person born in Romania who is searching for a place they can finally call home. \nAs part of the ROOF EU project\, Andrei Ursu worked closely with the Social Assistance Authority Directorate in Timișoara (DAS)\, a state institution\, and interviewed people living in uncertain circumstances: people without a home\, without a place to sleep\, or even without enough money to afford a loaf of bread. In Romania\, as in Hungary\, these people are often referred to as homeless. \nDuring an extensive research process\, Andrei collected interviews and stories that eventually became the basis for the text and the performance. \nThe play premiered at Basca Theatre in Timișoara in August 2022\, directed by Ana-Maria Ursu and performed by Benone Viziteu. Since then\, it has been presented several times\, including at the Caleido and Traian Neighborhood Festivals in Timișoara. \nOn September 7\, the Hungarian premiere of the play will take place at Independent Theater Hungary. This time\, the author himself will take the stage in an updated 2026 version\, which he also directs. \nAndrei Ursu (1984) is a Romanian playwright and storyteller. His works have been staged or presented as readings in Paris\, Ghent\, Berlin\, Kraków\, Craiova\, Iași\, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara. He is one of the co-founders of Basca Theatre in Timișoara. \nFunded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the granting authority. SUMMARY:Giuvlipen Theater Company (Romania): Get up\, Roma! - PART II. - ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording\n\nHERE\n\n\nBetween May 5 and 9\, Independent Theater Hungary organized the 8th Roma Heroes International Theater Festival in Budapest. At the festival\, British\, Italian\, Romanian\, and Hungarian Roma artists demonstrated through stand-up performances\, satirical monodramas\, live arts\, music\, and Q&A sessions how humor can become a weapon that liberates theater from the captivity of drama and victimhood. \nThe festival’s stand-up shows and monodramas will also be available online on the HowlRound platform from September 14 to 19. \n\nIn the Romanian performance Giuvlipen Theatre Company\, humor becomes a tool of resistance and a platform for self-expression\, cultural pride\, and political commentary. It is a celebration of the diversity of identities\, questioning the ruling order\, and a call to rethink who gets to tell the joke and who has been the target of jokes for too long. This kind of humor is not for the weak. The experienced audience knows that this Romanian group has never been known for being subtle or compromising. Why would their stand-up night be any different? The jokes hit hard\, they offend\, but they also liberate\, while helping you rise above. Come and experience it with us!

The scenes are both playful and thought-provoking\, shedding light on how we see each other and what we project onto others. \nDon’t you think it’s funny when they call you a gypsy in the morning and a skinhead in the evening?

About himself. These three words\, intended as recognition\, contain a surprising amount of meaning on both a personal and social level. What impact do these three words have? What does it take to overcome our prejudices\, and can we overcome them completely?

It is both entertaining and deeply confrontational: using humor and irony\, he calls out typical situations that reveal the insecurities and fears behind social prejudices. A “Gipsy Window-Giraffe”—an easily understandable dictionary for coexistence\, where the Roma perspective is not the goal\, but a tool for a shared journey of self-discovery.

SUMMARY:Riah Knight (Germany): Lie with me!
\n\n\nRiah Knight is a British-Romani artist based in Berlin whose practice spans acting\, music\, writing\, and dramaturgy. Raised around the UK Romani activist movement\, she developed a keen political awareness from a young age\, and continues to engage in activism through her art. \nGlossy Pain takes the audience to bed in their comedic one-woman show. How can we be vulnerable with each other\, when the world around us demands us to be hard? How can we expect others to be honest\, if we’re not even honest with ourselves? \nTeasing and tormenting both herself and the audience\, Riah Knight questions the authenticity of performance\, seeking answers from religious and mythical figures. \nWith a characteristic blend of humour and introspection and featuring original music\, this English-language solo promises to ignite discussion. Come lie with us! \nA production by Glossy Pain and Berlin TD Theatre. \nWarning: The performance is sexually explicit and deals with religion in a provocative manner. Recommended for ages 16 and up.
