The play will be performed in Hungarian with English subtitles.

In 1782, in Hont County, the disappearance of a village butcher triggered the brutal massacre of the local Roma population, despite the absence of any evidence or the victim’s body. The verdicts were based on confessions extracted through horrific torture.

A total of 131 Roma individuals were sentenced: 41 were publicly executed by hanging, beheading, or having their limbs broken, while others were condemned to forced labor. Their children were taken from them and placed in peasant households.

Cannibals is a powerful tribute to this tragic and often overlooked chapter of history.
