Roma Heroes 2026

Roma Hősök – VIII. Nemzetközi Színházi Fesztivál

In the Romanian performance Giuvlipen, humor becomes a tool of resistance and a platform for self-expression, cultural pride, and political expression. A celebration of the diversity of identities, a questioning of the established order, and a call to rethink who gets to tell the joke and who has been the butt of the joke for too long. We are breaking with this tradition at the 8th Roma Heroes - International Theatre Festival.

More than a dozen European Roma theater artists make us laugh through stand-up productions and satirical monodramas, while they speak about themselves and also show a distorted mirror of the world we live in.

As playwright D. W. Griffith said, “The source of humor is not happiness, but pain.”. We believe that if we dare to face our problems, we dare to talk about them and even joke about them, which is an important step towards healing.

The first half of the festival, held between May 5th and 9th, will be hosted by our permanent co-organizer, the Eötvös10 Cultural Center, and the programs will continue on the last two days at the Cellar Theater. Both venues will feature performances and audience meetings.

British-German, Italian, Romanian, as well as Hungarian Roma and Traveller performers will take to the stage at the two venues. Through their own stories, they share their traumas and joys, while also raising important questions about our shared world. The productions don't ask permission to say what many people would rather not say. Personal stories are true, which is why they are liberating. .

The performances will be shown in their original language with Hungarian and English subtitles, followed by an audience meeting. The festival program will also be complemented by concerts, because in addition to laughter, music also gives us a lot of strength to put down our burdens for a while!

The Festival is co-financed by the European Union.

The main organizer is the Independent Theater Hungary. Co-organizers are: Eötvös10 Művelődési Ház and Pinceszinház.
