Between May 5 and 9, Independent Theater Hungary organized the 8th Roma Heroes International Theater Festival in Budapest. At the festival, British, Italian, Romanian, and Hungarian Roma artists demonstrated through stand-up performances, satirical monodramas, live arts, music, and Q&A sessions how humor can become a weapon that liberates theater from the captivity of drama and victimhood.

The festival’s stand-up shows and monodramas will also be available online on the HowlRound platform from September 14 to 19.

This year, the 8th Roma Heroes Festival won the Special Award of the Theatre Critics’ Association, recognizing Independent Theater Hungary’s outstanding achievement spanning multiple seasons.

The main organizer of the festival is Independent Theater Hungary, co-organized by the Eötvös10 Cultural Center and the Ferencváros Cellar Theatre, and co-funded by the European Union.
