Independent Theatre Hungary offers the opportunity to participate in the Roma Heroes workshop. The workshop is aimed at groups of young people who want to learn about Hungarian and European Roma dramas. Each of the plays will have a heroic theme, which will be discussed and followed by the opportunity to share your own heroic deeds and stories. Participants will gain an insight into the world of European Roma communities, each other’s thoughts and the joy of creating together.
What is the aim of the workshop?
In the heroic stories, the focus is on the difficulties, the choices and their impact. Through the workshop, participants will get to know their peers and themselves better, develop their debate culture, communication and cooperation skills, and become more open to different points of view. The identity of Roma participants is developed and the prejudices of non-Roma participants towards Roma are reduced.
How does it happen?
In the first part of the 2*90 or 2*120 minute session, the dramatic heroes and heroes in general will be analysed. The dramas provide insights into the life, challenges and social situation of different Roma communities in Europe, but also raise difficulties and issues that are not specific to Roma. Participants will be shown excerpts from scenes from the performances of the dramas, and will then work in teams guided by focus reports, concluding with an oral presentation of the play and a moderated plenary discussion and debate. They will then have the opportunity to express their personal opinions, to share the dilemmas that arise, to reflect on each other and on the social or individual problems presented. In the second part, the young people share their personal hero stories, discuss the characteristics of the hero, and raise awareness of the importance of value-based decision-making and responsibility in their own lives and environments. Finally, they will create a collective artwork related to any story they have learned and present it to each other. The sessions are delivered by experienced, trained young Roma and non-Roma trainers.
