Five countries, five Roma hero stories in one volume? The crew of Independent Theatre Hungary created the world’s first Roma drama volume with theatre artists. The stories are written by Roma people, about Roma people but these stories are meant not only for them. The plays guide us from the UK, through Switzerland and Hungary to Romania.
It is a great pleasure for us that the volume is already available on Amazon in Hungarian and English languages and includes stories from five countries.
Would you be interested in getting an insight into the lives of Scottish and Irish travellers and wandering gypsies? Would you like to read about jenish genocide taking place 50 years ago in Switzerland? Are you curious about Roma traditions, early marriage and starting a family in a young age? Do you want to know which Hungarian actress wanted Brad Pitt to adopt her? Every single story is about real-life situations. The main goal of creating the volume is to reach as many people as possible and to show the reader the values of Roma theatre and communities.
If you are interested and want to order the Roma drama collection, click HERE!
We are pleased to announce that the 2nd part of the volume containing more and more stories will be published soon.
Roma Heroes During the Time of the Covid
We are European Roma/Traveller theater artists, who work on putting in focus the untold stories of our community members. Now we work on an online video series inspired by the stories of Roma/Traveler people, who reacted with activity and solidarity on the numerous challenges we faced in the last few month.
There are a lot of challenges we had in these months like:
- Closing the schools, online education, staying home the children
- Losing jobs or any other challenges regarding work
- Losing houses or locked down together in very small flats with other people
- Challenges regarding health services
- Losing the freedom of movement during lock down
- Discrimination even stronger than in general
- Many other things
If you know any heroes of these times, who did something relevant during these hash times, helped people, or find out some innovative solution, who started to do something new etc – please, let us know.
The hero of the story could have been someone from your family, friends, colleagues or community members. And it can be also you.
If you want that the stories of this hero will be remembered – just send a couple of sentences about the story for the following address: firstname.lastname@example.org
The real stories will be bases of inspiration, but the final art product won’t name any of the heroes and won’t use the stories in their original version in order not disturbing the life of any of the heroes.
We are waiting for your stories latest till the 3rd July.

WHAT DOES ROMA ART MEAN TO US? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT OUR ACTORS REPRESENT ROMA CULTURE THROUGH THEIR ART? 16 APRIL IS THE WORLD ROMA ACTORS DAY WHEN WE PAY TRIBUTE TO OUR ACTORS.
On the II. Romani World Congress in 1978 as a tribute to Charlie Chaplin, 16 April, his birthday, was declared the World Roma Actors Day. The Independent Theatre Hungary has been working for long to familiarise the Roma artists and their works of art with mainstream society.
Beginning from 2017, year by year, the Theatre has organised the one and only international theatre festival of the world that offers an opportunity for European Roma theatre companies and actors to present themselves. As part of the festival, we make in-depth interviews with the theatre professionals who share their thoughts frankly about the Roma, identity, their art and heroes. Visit our YouTube channel and listen to their stories.
In the present situation theatre has to face difficulties, just like many other sectors, so there’s a need to join forces and we need each-other to survive. Our latest production is the revival of the play Kosovo mon Amour in the form of the first covidist theatre video series in which our actors want to surprise the spectators from week to week.
THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE FOR EACH OTHER!
The portrait of Charlie Chaplin was also painted by Jozef Fečo, an amateur painter. As part of the project called ’Living books (word-image-voice)’ he created 13 portraits of world-famous people of Roma ancestry.
Roma Heroes Workshops online
The Roma Heroes Workshops are available on a digital platform for secondary tschool and university students from April. We offer online participation for those who are interested to adapt to the current situation. We were challenged by the online change-over, but it is very exciting for us. We are working on a solution to be with you in the form of online workshops in these difficult times. Considering the situation, we offer free workshops for 5 groups who want to get familiar with Roma plays, heroes and, of course, their own heroes and heroic acts.
We need heroes and fortitude these times
Our workshop helps the youngsters get to know and discuss the diversity of Roma plays, heroes, communities, challenges and values, as well as discover the heroes in themselves and in their environment. They can introduce their own stories to each-other by using creative tools. The participants can recognize their own and each-other’s hidden abilities. The team building gives unforgettable experience besides forging participants together and strengthening the communication within the groups.
Send us your application to firstname.lastname@example.org! The selection will be in the order of application.
