Last year, Independent Theater Hungary launched the project “Roma Heroes in Theater and Everyday Life – with Trainings and Education for Roma Youth”, which was implemented with the support of the European Union. The ambitious initiative aimed to train new trainers in the methods of holding the Roma Heroes Workshop and to provide space through two publications to present the stories of outstanding personalities who are often overlooked.
The partners of the project are from Slovakia: Ternipe – združenie pre rómsku mládež na Slovensku a v Maďarsku, and from Romania: Hungarian Teachers’ Association in Romania.
The project resulted in the training of several trainers from Hungary and Slovakia, and the creation of two publications that present the stories of inspiring people living among us to those interested. The Hungarian publication, subtitled Among Us (Köztünk), is about 14 Roma heroes who are of different ages and backgrounds, represent different professions, and who were guided by the defining thoughts, values, or experiences of their lives. The young people participating in the training interpret the stories, thoughts, and experiences of these heroes to the readers through short writings.
The publication also includes links that provide interested parties with the opportunity to learn more about the work of each hero.
Read with love and attention!
